Scope for Employment

The potential of Bioinformatics in the identification of useful genes leading to the development of new gene products, drug discovery and drug development has led to a paradigm shift in the fields of biology and biotechnology. These fields are becoming more & more computationally intensive. The new paradigm, now emerging, is that all the genes should be known "in the sense of being resident in database available electronically". A graduate of this programme can gain entry easily in to the fields of Bioinformatics, Information Technology Industry, Biotechnology Core Industry, IT and Pharmaceutical Industry.
Admission enrolment & General Enqueries:
Eligibility to appear Entrance Examination:
A student who qualified intermediate (10+2) with MPC (Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry),
BiPC (Biology, Physics and Chemistry) or MbiPC (Mathematics, Biology Physics and Chemistry)

Program Description:

Vignan University offers B.Tech Bioinformatics Course to meet the demand and requirement of bioinformaticians in India and abroad. The main aim is to develop and apply state-of-the-art mathematical and computer science techniques to problems now arising in the life sciences, particularly those now appearing in the post-genomic era. Students will receive invidualized training and mentoring in a technology-rich environment from a student-centered faculty.
The mission of the department is to educate student community to improve the living standard of their family, industry and society. We provide world-class quality of education. The importance and usefulness of Bioinformatics is being understood in last few years by many industries. Therefore, large Bioinformatics R & D divisions are being established in many pharmaceutical companies, biotechnology companies and even in other conventional industries dealing with biological applications. Bioinformatics is thus becoming one of the most sought after careers in the field of biosciences.
While designing the course, the scope of the expanding Bioinformatics industries with its many specialized fields like Microarray informatics, Machine learning, Medical Informatics etc. is taken in to account As many as 15 courses related to Information Technology are incorporated in the Biotechnology programme so that a graduate of this programme can be immediately absorbed by Information Technology industry. We have built sound expertise as well as an elaborate infrastructure and equipment base for carrying out effective teaching, research and development activities in the area of Bioinformatics.
Bioinformatics is the field of science in which biology, computer science, and information technology merge into a single discipline. The ultimate goal of the field is to enable the discovery of new biological insights as well as to create a global perspective from which unifying principles in biology can be discerned.
Bioinformatics is the apt career for those who have an aptitude and interest to work with Molecular Modelling and Drug Discovery for the welfare of mankind. However B.Tech Bioinformatics is different from B.Sc. / M.Sc Bioinformatics. The latter courses teach us to use Bioinformatics tools, whereas the former covers the Information technology which will enable an engineer to create Bioinformatics softwares / Bioinformatics Tools through the use of Programming languages.
At this school, students learn in modern classrooms and carry out research in state-of-the-art laboratory facilities. An opportunity is also provided in the curriculum to a student to adopt him/her in the IT sector through of number of IT related courses.

ProfessionalOutcomes: Educational experience offered through this program will enable students to reach their goal. The teaching and training of this programme will make student skilled, efficient, punctual, disciplined, dedicated &, perfect professional worker in his/her chosen disciplines of various challenging paths like Bioinformatics, Information technology, Biotechnology, Health care, Clinical Trials and in management streams.
Employment Resources in Bioinformatics
The scope for a Bioinformatics professional is immense
He/she can take up research avenues in Government and National Level Organizations;
(i).DBT (Departmnet of Biotechnology),CSIR (Council for Scientific and Industrial Research),
(ii) ICMR (Indian council for Medical Research), ICAR (Indian Council of Agricultural Research),DRDO (Defence Research and Developmmet Organization) etc.,
Besides this, career opportunities are also available in different areas like Life Sciences: Scientific Curator, Gene Analyst, Protein Analyst, Phylogenitist
Research Scientist / Associate,
Computer Science / Engineering: Data base programmer, Bio-informtics software developer, Computational biologist, Network Administrator/Analyst,
Applied Science: Structural analyst, Molecular Modeler, Bio-statistician, Bio-mechanics, Database programmer. Pharmaceutical Science: Cheminformatician, Pharmacogenetician, Pharmacogenomics, Research Scientist / Associate.

WorkExperience,Internships&Research:

Students are encouraged for the Industrial Internship Program under the supervision of a senior faculty member. Typically, this internship takes place during the summer of the students' third year, and lasts for 6 weeks. Such internships play a valuable role in giving students a taste of industrial research and help them establish a network of contacts outside the University. The students also learn new techniques on state-of-the-art equipment, and return to the University laboratories with fresh ideas and a better sense of where the challenges lie within their learning area. We have already signed MoUs with some industries and in the process to sign with somne more companies
Some of the key benefits of this program are:
Opportunity to apply the class room learnt knowledge to the industrial challenges
Chance to develop valuable professional relationships
Opportunity to connect with potential employers
Students understand the corporations working style and expectations after recruitment procedure
The Industrial Internship Programme has been established to provide an opportunity for students to obtain a practical industrial learning experience, the idea is to expose them to the world of work such that they appreciate the deviations from theory at the ground level.
The institute will organize an internship. However, if students have specific requirements then they have a choice to look for their own internships.
These assignments not only give the students on-the-job training but also give them real life exposure enabling them to gain a wider and a richer perspective of the industrial environment.
Students participating in this programme will inculcate the qualities like Sound practical skills, Good interpersonal skills, Effective communication skills, Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

5 Combined Degrees:

Students can combine this programme with any other undergraduate degree to suit their professional interests. The four year B.Tech. Programme is designed in such a way that he/she can go for higher studies such as M.Tech / MS in Bioinformatics/Biotechnology/Biomedical Engg, MS in Pharmacy, MS in IT, MS in Computational Biology or MBA. We at Vignan also believe that a proper orientation towards management programmes leads to self discipline and motivation towards career, hence a variety of management programmes are also incorporated in the curriculum. This enables the graduate of this programme to get admission into an MBA programme. To facilitate the student to appear to the civil examinations comfortably, syllabi of prelims and mains of these are included.
